New X-ray technique reveals clues about ancient 1,900-year-old mummy - CNN--For nearly a century, Egyptian mummies have been imaged noninvasively with X-rays. In findings outlined in the Journal of the Royal Society on Tuesday, the team of researchers described using a combination of CT scanning and X-ray diffraction for the first time, revealing clues about the ancient corpse lying inside.
For the first time, words have been read from a burnt, rolled-up scroll from Herculaneum, buried by Mount Vesuvius in AD79. The key to the discovery was a technique called "X-ray phase-contrast tomography", most commonly used in medicine.
Protecting Artifacts From UV Light - Harmful UV rays can discolor and deteriorate artifacts over time. See how museums, like the Vanderbilt Museum, use Rosco's UV Filter solutions to remove the Ultraviolet from their display lighting.
Canvas Tote Bag. This unique narrow-angle color image is of the Earth, dubbed Pale Blue Dot, is a part of the first ever portrait of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic. From Voyager's great distance Earth is a mere point of light, less than the size of a picture element even in the narrow-angle camera. Earth was a crescent
What is it? It was found at the bottom of the sea aboard an ancient Greek ship. Its seeming complexity has prompted decades of study, although some of its functions remained unknown. X-ray images of the device have confirmed the nature of the Antikythera mechanism, and discovered several surprising functions. The Antikythera mechanism has been discovered to be a mechanical computer of an accuracy thought impossible in 80 BC, when the ship that carried it sank.

A witch bottle in X-ray. Witch bottles were made for protection. Often these were filled with bent pins or nails and the owner's urine, amongst other personal and symbolic artifacts. Here is a great description of the way this was thought to work in folk-belief: "During the 17th century, British people often blamed witches for any ill health or misfortune they suffered, says Massey. 'The idea of the witch bottle was to throw the spell back on the witch,' he says. 'The urine and the bulb o...

This exquisite historical Viking age knife was probably made from a cut-down sax blade. The blade is pattern welded, and the fittings, shown in more detail to the left and right, are magnificent. The grip is in the form of a bird, with decorations incised into the wood and bronze making up the grip. The total length of the knife is 31cm (12.5in). X-ray images show that the tang is quite short.
